The Japanese Garden of Calgary

a.k.a.

“Yuki no Naka no Yorokobi” ( 雪の中での喜び )

I've decided to share a vision that will connect Calgary’s natural beauty with the timeless elegance of Japanese garden traditions: The Japanese Garden of Calgary. This garden will serve as a bridge between two cultures, offering a space for reflection, cultural exchange, and celebration.

Proposed Name for the Garden

The name “Yuki no Naka no Yorokobi” (雪の中での喜び), meaning “Joy in the Snow”, symbolizes the joy, resilience, and renewal found in the coldest of seasons, deepening our connection to winter’s beauty.

Why This Garden Matters

  • It will enhance Calgary’s cultural landscape, becoming a destination for both locals and visitors.
  • It will foster connection and learning, serving as a space for cultural exchange between Japan and Calgary traditions.
  • It will create a lasting legacy, celebrating nature, community, and the beauty of everyday life.

Let’s Make This Happen

Join me on this exciting journey! Whether through your expertise, advice, or connections, your support can help bring this vision to life. Together, we can create a garden that will leave a lasting impact on Calgary, its residents, and visitors for generations to come.

With its minimalist design, use of natural elements, and focus on balance, it is no wonder why this style has gained the top ranking. In short, Zen landscaping emphasizes harmony with nature where rocks, water and plants, create a balanced relationship with the surrounding scenery. Zen gardens are designed to change and evolve with the seasons. Thus, they require low maintenance compared to traditional lawns and western-style landscaping. In addition to providing a peaceful retreat for busy homeowners, Zen landscaping can also increase the value of their property. The timeless beauty and unique appeal of Zen gardens are highly attractive, making them a smart investment that can set your property apart. Zen landscaping also promotes long-term sustainability. Through the use of native plants and ...

The Joy of Self-Taught Japanese Zen Styled Landscaping

By Jose G. Monagas  |  https://ishidorozengardens.com/ For some of us, traditional college schooling or an apprenticeship can be quite formal and expensive. In contrast, self-learning and lifelong learning can be cost-effective, with so many open and affordable resources available, including books, manuals, online tutorials, forums, blogs, and more. The best learning method depends on your personal learning style, availability, and career goals. Without the constraints of conventional schooling or an apprenticeship, you have the freedom to explore and experiment. You can learn at your own pace, focusing on those areas that interest you the most. This freedom fosters creativity and innovation, allowing you to develop your unique talents. This makes Japanese style landscaping accessible to everyone, regardless of race, gender, income, and other circumstances. Without the pressure of grades and attendance, you can tailor your learning schedule according to your lifestyle. Whether...

Why Choose Japanese Gardening over Traditional Lawns

By Jose G. Monagas  |  https://ishidorozengardens.com/ As a neighbor, I've noticed a growing interest among Calgarians in adopting sustainable gardening and landscaping practices. However, many haven't yet explored the numerous benefits offered by Japanese landscaping. Japanese gardening is rooted in reverence for nature, drawing from centuries-old traditions influenced by Shinto and Buddhist philosophies. It aims to craft meticulously designed spaces that harmonize with the seasons and invite contemplation. Stepping into a Japanese garden (for example, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, AB), you immediately sense tranquility. This effect is achieved through carefully curated elements like raked gravel simulating flowing water, serene ponds, meticulously pruned trees celebrating the beauty of imperfection, and more. In stark contrast, traditional lawns are monocultures that demand constant watering, fertilizing, and mowing. They serve little purpose beyond ae...
